'Natural' Face Paint, What's the Big Deal?

Glob is thrilled to offer safe and natural, non-nano face paints for your little ghouls and goblins! As you may be aware, most popular brands of children’s face paints use synthetic and chemical ingredients that can be harmful to your child’s skin. Heavy metals and lead in children's face paint is also something to be concerned about when costume planning this Halloween.

For comparison, look at the main ingredients in face paints from leading brands:

  • Polyethylene Glycol (PEG): potential carcinogenic petroleum ingredient used in cleansers to dissolve oil and grease. PEG adjusts the melting point and thickens products.
  • Propylene Glycol (PG) + Butylene Glycol: used as antifreeze, this gaseous hydrocarbon penetrates the skin and can weaken protein and cellular structure. Both propylene and butylene glycol are used in cosmetics as humectants to bind moisture and hold water to the skin. Both are associated with brain, liver, and kidney abnormalities.
  • FD&C Color Pigments: synthetic colors made from coal tar contain heavy metal salts that deposit toxins into the skin, causing skin sensitivity and irritation. Studies have shown that synthetic colors are linked to hyperactivity in children and cancer.
  • Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben): used to prevent the growth of microbes in cosmetic products. Can be absorbed through the skin, blood, and digestive system. Parabens are linked to skin irritation, endocrine disruption, reproductive toxicity, immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity, and cancer.

Glob's Ingredients

Glob uses organic jojoba, sweet almond, and coconut oil triglycerides, combined with natural kaolinite clay (used in hydrating mud masks), beeswax, and natural pigments. Their natural coloring and extracts include black carrot, red cabbage, turmeric, beetroot, grape skin, vanilla, and licorice. These botanical ingredients are rich in anti-oxidants, which promotes healthy skin.

Say 'No' to Nano

You may have heard of nanoparticle safety concerns in regards to children’s sunscreen. Mineral sunscreens commonly contain nanoparticles, which are very tiny particles that may be absorbed through the skin. These particles have been linked to accelerated skin aging, cancer and environmental toxicity, mainly associated with titanium dioxide, a popular ingredient in natural sunscreens. Glob’s face paints contain only non-nano zinc oxide as a whitener, making theirs the only non-nano and titanium dioxide-free face paints on the market!

White ~ sweet almond oil, beeswax, zinc oxide, arrowroot powder, vanilla powder.

Black ~ sweet almond oil, beeswax, iron oxide, arrowroot powder, licorice powder.

Orange ~ sweet almond oil, beeswax, zinc oxide, arrowroot powder, annatto.

Glob founder and artist Ashley Phelps, is gratified to offer parents, schools and teachers a safer choice for craft products. After working as a children’s art teacher, she searched high and low for truly green art supplies. With very few options on the market, she decided to make her own.

Ashley’s all-natural formulations for art, craft and body paints use only natural, botanical (even food-grade) color sources and organic extracts: plants, vegetables and herbs. The pigments are naturally vibrant and have been used safely and effectively for color since the beginning of time. Also, Glob offers the only natural, non-nano face paints available!

Safety

You may have noticed that arts and crafts products do not list ingredients. Consumers rely upon "non toxic" certification, believing that their art materials have undergone sufficient testing to ensure the products they use are safe. Don't let these labels fool you.

Art pigments (colors) are commonly made from petrochemicals, and the actual hazards of these materials are not always known. In the US, synthetic pigments that have never been tested for toxicity can be labeled "non-toxic." The rationale? There is no data to prove otherwise.

Arts and crafts paints also often contain a host of toxic ingredients like formaldehyde (a carcinogen), one of the most common paint preservatives. Paints may not only be hazardous to the consumer, but also the environment. Certified "non-toxic" pigments can still be toxic to fish and other wildlife.

Glob uses all natural food colors in their paints, which are sustainable and biodegradable, making them safe to wash down the sink and into our water supply. They also conform to the safety standards of the U.S., and the comprehensive requirements of Europe, Canada and Australia.
